Singer/Singers
Worldwide Familes Website

Introduction

Welcome to the Singer(s) Family Project website. This site is dedicated to the memory of my father Roy Singers. He was the last male descendent of my line but fortunately there are still a number of 'live' lines dotted around the world. The intention is to expand the project so that the site becomes a repository for as many of the family records as possible.

The content to date has been largely provided by Alan Morrison—without his help none of this would be here now. Many thanks Alan.

Alan has a large collection of genealogical material not just on the Singer(s) family but the Reidford and Allan families too. For more information on his work please contact him on

If you are unfamiliar with the Singer/Singers familiy we would like to clarify the scope of the site and as a quick résumé of the origins of the family name, here is Alan on the subject:

"Various spellings of ‘Singer’ as taken from the old parish records (OPRs) pre-civil registration in 1855:

• Seyniour

• Seynour

• Singar

• Singer

• Singers

• Singyeor

• Segneyour

• Segnior

• Seingyar

• Seingyeor

• Seingyor

• Seingyowr

• Seinyowr

• Seinzeor

• Seinzeur

• Seinzier

• Seinzieur

• Seinzor

The reason for all the different spellings is, that up to as late as 1870, only the gentry could read and write. When a birth, marriage or death occurred, the ‘recorder’ of the event was the parish minister or priest, and he recorded what he thought was the way to spell the name, as pronounced by the informant. In rural Aberdeenshire, with the broad dialect, it is easy to see why there are so many variations.

Many Aberdeenshire Singers were members of the Episcopalian church. My theory for this is, that originally being French or German, they were Roman Catholic.

When the reformation happened, and Catholicism was rejected in Scotland, they turned to the nearest form of religion to Catholicism which was the Episcopalian religion.

Originally thought to have come from Normandy, France, or Le Courcelle, France (on the French/German border) in the 16th century. There is no connection with the Jewish name of Singer."

Alan Morrison, October 1992

The mission of ‘singersfamily.org’ is to record information on all known Singer/Singers family lines descended from William Singer (ca 1655–1707) and Elspet Scot. It will include all those related either by birth or by marriage and, time allowing, the extended families.

As the site content grows, the intention is to add a search facility. In the future too we hope to add a bulletin board so that contacting relatives will become easier.

We hope that you will participate in this project. Please feel free to contribute detail on additions or corrections. Any feedback on the site generally would also be welcomed—but keep it constructive!
